What are my business internet plan options in Australia?

In Australia, businesses have several options when it comes to choosing the right internet plan to meet their specific needs. The primary business internet plan options available include:

  • Business NBN plans: the National Broadband Network (NBN) offers a range of business plans with varying speed tiers and data allowances. These plans use a mix of fibre, fixed wireless and satellite technologies to provide internet connectivity, often at high maximum speeds.
  • Home wireless broadband: home wireless broadband plans provide businesses with internet connectivity through a wireless network, either 4G or 5G. While not fixed line connections like the NBN, meaning they can be transported between offices or places of work, they’re designed to provide a stable internet connection. These may also be suitable for rural businesses without access to the NBN
  • Mobile broadband: these plans also utilise the 4G or 5G mobile networks to provide businesses with internet access on the go, designed to be used while roaming or in multiple places if you need to travel.

When comparing internet plans, it's essential to consider factors like your location, the size of your business, your data requirements and your budget. Each option has its advantages and disadvantages, so selecting the right plan is crucial to ensuring your business remains connected and productive.

How do I work out what type of internet plan I need for my business?

It’s important to think about what your business might need when it comes to a connection type. Here are some of the options which may be suitable for different businesses:

Sole traders

Sole traders

  • Suitable plan: NBN 50
  • Business size: 1 person
  • Download/upload speeds: 50Mbps/20Mbps

If you’re working on your own, your internet needs aren’t likely to be as great. You won’t be dealing with as much congestion on your network, such as multiple people downloading or uploading at one time, meaning you may be able to use an NBN 50 plan. However, even as a sole trader, you might need an NBN 100 plan depending on the nature of your work.

Small businesses

Small businesses

  • Suitable plan: NBN 100
  • Business size: 1-5 people
  • Download/upload speeds: 100Mbps/20Mbps or 40Mbps

Small businesses with several individuals using the internet at once are more likely to need a fast internet plan, such as NBN 100. This speed tier can typically comfortably support up to five users (or up to three for particularly heavy usage). You can also choose between 100/40 and 100/20 plans, giving you a faster upload option in some cases.

Medium businesses

Medium businesses

  • Suitable plan: NBN 250
  • Business size: 3-7 people
  • Download/upload speeds: 250Mbps/25Mbps

An NBN 250 plan may be right for your business if you have up to seven people using the internet heavily. One of the two additions to the original NBN lineup, NBN 250 (also known as Superfast) boasts rapid potential download speeds. However, it’s currently only supported by Fibre to the Premises (FTTP) and Hybrid Fibre Coaxial (HFC) connections.

Large businesses

Large businesses

  • Suitable plan: NBN 1000
  • Business size: 10-30 people
  • Download/upload speeds: 1Gbps/50Mbps

Large businesses will have different needs when it comes to their internet, which is why an NBN 1000 plan may be suited to your needs. With potential speeds of up to 1Gbps (though generally maxing out at 600Mbps), it may enable businesses of up to 30 internet users at any one time to connect and download. However, like NBN 250, FTTP and HFC are the only available connections for this plan type.

Mobile businesses

Mobile businesses

  • Suitable plan: mobile broadband
  • Business size: 1 person
  • Download/upload speeds: up to 1Gbps/40Mbps (5G)

NBN won’t be suitable for businesses who are constantly on the move, such as sole traders who visit clients or travel frequently or mobile businesses like food trucks. Because of this, you’re likely to need a mobile broadband plan. Although 5G plans can theoretically reach the speeds listed above, these will depend on the reception in your area, your provider and whether your plan comes with speed caps.

How do I compare business internet plans?

Comparing business internet plans in Australia is a crucial step in ensuring that you select the right plan to meet your specific needs. Here are some key factors to consider when comparing business internet plans:

  • Speeds: assess the speed options offered by different plans and choose one that aligns with your business's requirements. Consider not only your current needs but also potential future growth.
  • Cost: compare the total cost of each plan, including setup fees, equipment costs and ongoing monthly fees. Ensure that the plan fits within your budget without compromising on essential features.
  • Static IP address: for businesses which require hosting services, VPNs or remote access, having a static IP address is essential. Check if the plan includes a static IP for free or if it's available as an add-on.
  • Business support: look for plans offering dedicated business support. Reliable customer service and technical support can be invaluable when you encounter issues or need assistance with your connection.
  • Data allowance: evaluate the data allowance provided by each plan. Consider whether the plan offers unlimited data or if there are data caps. Ensure the plan can accommodate your internet usage, whether it's for routine activities or data-intensive tasks. In the case of NBN and home wireless plans, these often come with unlimited data.
  • Enhanced Service Level Agreements (eSLAs): eSLAs outline the provider's commitment to service quality, specifically how long issues will take to resolve and courses of action if your connection fails. Read and compare eSLAs to ensure they meet your business's reliability and performance expectations.
  • Contract terms: review the contract terms carefully. Some plans offer month-to-month flexibility, while others may require longer commitments. Assess which aligns better with your business's needs and budget. If you’re looking to potentially expand in the future, think about how easily you’re able to switch to a new plan if needed.

By carefully considering these factors, you can make a more informed decision when comparing business internet plans and select the one that best supports your connectivity needs.

Frequently asked questions about business internet plans

How much will my business internet plan cost?

The cost of a business internet plan can vary widely depending on factors like speed, location, data allowance and type of connection. For instance, an NBN 100 plan will be cheaper than NBN 250, while mobile broadband is unlikely to cost the same as home wireless broadband.

Can I buy a business internet plan with higher upload speeds?

Yes – some business internet plans offer the option to choose higher upload speeds, especially if your business requires efficient data transfer or video conferencing. For example, some plans may offer upload speeds of up to 200Mbps instead of the standard maximum of 50Mbps. Be prepared to pay more for plans with faster upload capabilities.

Are business NBN plans different from home NBN?

Business NBN plans are tailored to meet the specific needs of businesses. They often come with features like static IP addresses, business-grade support and eSLAs which aren’t typically included in home NBN plans. However, aside from these features, the functionality of business plans is largely the same as home plans.

Can I use my home internet connection if I work from home?

Working from home using a residential internet connection is possible, but it may not be ideal for all businesses. Home plans may lack the business-grade features and support necessary for your needs. It’s important to assess your business needs if you’re working from home, as you may need to upgrade your existing plan to accommodate your work-from-home needs.

Can I take out a business phone and internet plan?

Yes – some providers offer internet plan bundles which can include either a phone plan or a landline phone for your business. Compare your options and speak with providers if you’re looking to include a phone or phone plan in the same deal.
