The Pembroke Welsh Corgi is a delightful and charming breed made famous by its association with the late Queen Elizabeth II, who owned many of this breed in her lifetime. The word ‘corgi’ is Welsh for ‘dwarf dog,’ and this ancient breed originates from the Pembrokeshire area of Wales. These compact dogs are easily recognized by their short legs, long bodies, and upright ears. They are closely related to their near cousins, the Cardigan Welsh Corgi. However, there are distinct differences between the two breeds. Cardigan Corgis have long bushy tails and larger, rounder ears, whereas Pembroke Corgis have shorter tails and smaller, pointed ears. Their shorter tails are thought to be a result of tail docking, which occurred regularly with this breed before this practice was made illegal.
Corgis were traditionally used as herding dogs, known for their agility and intelligence when rounding up sheep. Pembroke Welsh Corgis are characterised by their friendly and outgoing nature. They are highly social dogs that thrive in the company of other dogs and their human families. Despite their small stature, corgis are active and energetic dogs, requiring regular exercise and mental stimulation to avoid their tendency towards obesity.
