What’s the fastest type of internet plan available in Australia?

When it comes to the fastest internet plan currently available in Australia, the frontrunner is NBN 1000. This plan boasts astonishing theoretical download speeds of up to 1000Mbps (1Gbps), although in most cases this is likely to cap out at between 600Mbps and 700Mbps.

NBN 1000 is an absolute powerhouse for households and businesses with a need for high-speed connectivity. With such rapid speeds, you can seamlessly engage in data-intensive activities like 8K video streaming, online gaming, and large-scale file uploads or downloads. However, it's essential to understand that not every corner of Australia has access to NBN 1000.

The availability of such high-speed internet plans depends on the infrastructure in your area. NBN 1000 primarily relies on the latest fibre optic technology, which may not have been rolled out everywhere. More specifically, only Fibre to the Premises (FTTP) and Hybrid Fibre Coaxial (HFC) are capable of supporting these speeds, which is also the case for NBN 250.

Fixed line connections like the NBN are considered the most reliable when it comes to delivering powerful internet speeds, so those without an FTTP or HFC connection may look to another fast plan, NBN 100, as the next best option. This plan type is readily available to households and businesses and is capable of supporting data-intensive activities like streaming, video conferencing, gaming and more with up to 100Mbps download speeds.

What’s the fastest home wireless broadband plan?

In contrast to the NBN, the fastest types of home wireless broadband plan are those which offer 5G connectivity. This is because they rely on the 5G mobile network to establish an internet connection, which is also capable of theoretical speeds of up to 1Gbps to rival the fastest NBN plans. 5G home wireless plans generally either come with 50Mbps or 100Mbps caps or are uncapped.

However, the important factor to note with home wireless plans is that they aren’t considered as reliable as fixed line connections like the NBN. Variables such as network congestion and distance from the nearest tower (or the overall reception in your area) mean speeds can vary dramatically. In real-world applications, uncapped speeds are likely to fall between 100Mbps and 300Mbps but could reach or exceed 500Mbps in some cases.

It's also important to note that 5G isn’t available Australia-wide yet, which is also the case with NBN 1000, meaning those without access may have to settle for 4G home wireless broadband instead. Unlike 5G, most 4G home plans are limited to speeds of just 20Mbps to 25Mbps, meaning they aren’t fast and may not be suitable for your needs.

What’s the fastest mobile broadband plan?

Because mobile broadband plans also rely on mobile networks like home wireless plans, the fastest available option for this type of internet is also 5G. However, you may experience slower maximum or average download speeds on a mobile broadband plan, as the connection isn’t set at a single home or office.

While these plans are cheaper than home wireless in many cases, they may actually work out to be more expensive per GB you use. This is because almost all mobile broadband plans come with data limits, with low-end usage starting under 5GB and higher-end plans reaching 400GB or more per month.

Top tips for increasing your internet speed

Check your plan

Start by ensuring you have an internet plan that matches your needs. Different activities like streaming, gaming or basic browsing require varying speeds. If your plan is too slow, consider upgrading to a faster one.

Reduce background usage

Background apps and devices can consume bandwidth without your knowledge. Make sure no devices are unnecessarily connected to your network and close or limit the use of apps and services that are using the internet in the background.

Optimise your Wi-Fi connection

A significant factor in internet speed is your Wi-Fi setup, which is important to get right. Place your router in a central location away from obstructions and consider using a Wi-Fi extender or mesh system for larger spaces.

Perform regular maintenance

Routinely reset your modem and router to clear any temporary glitches. Additionally, keep your devices and router firmware up to date, as manufacturers often release updates that can improve performance and security.

Common questions about fast internet plans answered

Is the fastest internet plan the best for me?

While fast internet offers high speeds, they might not be the best plans for everyone. Your ideal plan depends on your usage. If you stream HD videos or work from home, a fast plan might be preferable for you. However, if you’re someone who only uses it for light browsing and checking your emails, an NBN 100 or 5G home wireless plan may not necessarily be required.

Who is the fastest internet provider in Australia?

While the fastest providers are technically those offering NBN 1000 and 5G home wireless plans with high speed capabilities, Exetel is the fastest provider in Australia based on its plans’ advertised speeds, according to data from the ACCC. Its June 2023 release revealed data from March indicating that although Exetel didn’t necessarily offer the fastest plans, the speeds delivered on these plans were met and exceeded at 103.5%.

How can I check the internet speeds at my home or office?

You can use online speed testing tools, which are available through a range of Australian sites, to check your internet speed. Ensure no one is heavily using the connection during the test for accurate results.

Can my modem impact the internet speeds delivered at my home or office?

Yes – your modem can affect your internet speed. Older modems may not support the latest speeds. Ensure your modem is compatible with your plan and consider upgrading if needed for optimal performance.
