Our verdict

The Kia EV6 is a sleek and stylish electric vehicle that will turn heads. It treads the space between futuristic and conservative perfectly and is sure to be popular with consumers. $75k for an entry level model is still a lot of money, however!

Battery Size / Capacity

The Kia EV6 GT Lithium-Ion battery has a nominal capacity of 77.4kWh with a useable capacity of 74kWh. It can handle up to 233kW DC fast charging, which gives it 10-80% in about 16min. It can also be charged using a usual AC outlet of 11kW, giving it 0-100% in about 8 hours.

Range

The GT-Line AWD has a WLTP stated range of 484km.

Speed and Drive

The Kia EV6 GT-Line AWD does the 0-100km/h dash in 3.5 seconds with a top speed of 260km/h. Also features smart regenerative braking, which can be operated by steering wheel switches based on real-time navigation and radar data.

You can also choose different drive modes: Normal, Sport, or Eco. You can toggle this in the cockpit or via voice controls. The one-speed engine outputs 740Nm of torque.

The powertrain is silent, buttery smooth and a breeze to drive in commuter mode. However, the weight of the car and its torque application, coupled to the mismatched electronic limited-slip differential and electronic stability control system means that there’s much to be desired in the cornering and handling when flicking over to Sports mode.

Added to that, it feels as if the regenerative braking is dialled up to 11, even if you don’t want it to. Corners might feel lacklustre, but straights are something else. You’ll be holding on to the sides if your driver decides to overtake in a hurry, let me assure you.

Exterior

The front bumper and grille feature the Kia ‘Digital Tiger Face’ design, tapering feline style headlights toward the middle of the “froot” (front boot) for a streamlined look. The GT-Line variants offer 20” alloy wheels with a sleek and sporty exterior body kit, softening the lines of the usual “box on wheels” designs of modern SUVs.

You can also carry shopping to the boot with ease, thanks to the handsfree electric tailgate. You also get a matte plastic wheel arch mouldings and gloss black exterior trim as well as laminated front door glass and rear window privacy glass.

The doors pop out and fold flush when not in use and there’s also rain sensing wipers so you never have to judge whether it’s showering or not.

Interior

The interior is billed as “vegan” made of black faux suede or white leather depending on what you go for, with much of the interior made of recycled materials. The cockpit and steering column offer dual 12.3” curved display that skirts the line between instrument cluster and dedicated Augmented Reality heads up display. That said, there is an AR HUD, displaying driving information on the windscreen and turn by turn instructions from the navigation system. You get seven years of Kia Connect (UVO) services and can connect it via an app.

It’s a comfortable ride, featuring eight-way adjustable power driver's seat with two-way power lumbar support and two-position memory – the same goes for the back seats (except it doesn’t have the memory installed – and the middle seat misses out.) You can even go business class and recline to almost 180°.

But that’s all good though, considering the seatbacks have USB ports to power their devices without shuffling anyone about. There’s also V2L (Vehicle to Load) power underneath the rear passenger seats.

Like everything modern these days, it comes with RGB lighting – you can tailor the front and rear ambient lights to your liking in 64 different colours. It also features active sound design – which is a fancy word for fake driving noises. (You don’t need these on, of course.) If you like a bit of tunes instead, you can listen to dulcet tones via the fourteen (!!) speaker Meridian setup, which includes four tweeters, four woofers, and one subwoofer.

A central dial on the console changes “gears” with push-button parking mode. You can also rest your phone atop this console for wireless charging. Apple CarPlay is wireless; and again, for some bizarre reason, Android Auto is wired only.

Inside there’s a wide sunroof which takes full advantage of the space, instead of just a little square that sits above you that you never really use.

Thanks to the E-GMP platform, the floor is completely flat and gives the back row much more legroom than other comparable EV SUVs.

Garnering a top-tier five-star ANCAP Safety Rating, almost all active safety assistance features are standard. This consists of adaptive cruise control with stop and go, blind-spot collision alert and avoidance help, lane following and maintaining assist, rear-cross traffic alert and avoidance aid, and auto emergency braking (AEB) with moving object (cars, bikes, etc.) turning recognition. Dual frontal, side chest-protecting and side head-protecting (curtain) airbags are fitted as standard.

Additionally, all variations are equipped with driver attention alert, lead vehicle departure alert, intelligent speed limit help, safe exit warning (which keeps you from opening the doors into the path of an approaching car or bike), and safe exit warning.

The GT variant also sports rear Autonomous Emergency Braking while parking, A 360-degree surround vision camera with different angle views, an automatic kid rear door lock, and a blind-spot view monitor camera.

Wheel size:

The wheelbase of the Kia EV6 GT-Line is 2900 mm, and comes with 20” alloy wheels. The Air line comes in at a slightly smaller 19”.

Boot / Storage Space

The rear storage (boot) can hold up to 1,300L after using the quick release seatback folding. There’s also an additional 20L of front storage (froot?) as well as a centre console tray for bags and other small items. You can also lay down an anti-moisture boot liner for muddy or dirty loads.

Towing Capacity

There is a tow hitch available and can tow 750kg unbraked and 1800kg braked.

Conclusion

It’s a great hybrid of sports tourer and SUV and can dash off in straight lines with the best of them. The interior is comfortable and plush and there’s something for everyone. If you’re expecting Sports level handling, look elsewhere.
