What car insurance policies are available through RACQ?

RACQ offers the following types of car insurance to Australian drivers:

Comprehensive car insurance

Comprehensive car insurance offers an extensive array of coverage options, encompassing various types of damage to your vehicle resulting from accidents, regardless of fault. RACQ’s comprehensive car insurance provides a host of features and benefits, including the following:

  • Loss of or damage to your car due to a collision, whether you’re at fault or not, fire, theft or weather, such as storm, flood or hail
  • Legal liability for damage to other people’s property caused by your car up to $20 million
  • Emergency repairs to ensure your vehicle is safe to drive (up to $500)
  • Cover for personal property or baby capsules and child seats damaged as a result of an insured event in your vehicle (both up to $500)
  • Cover for a rental car following the theft or attempted theft of your vehicle for up to 21 days and $75 per day
  • Cover for a rental car following a not-at-fault accident where the other driver is entirely responsible until your car is repaired or your claim is paid, up to $75 per day
  • Up to $750 for the replacement and recoding of stolen keys and locks on your car
  • Replacement of your vehicle for a new one in the event of a total loss if it’s purchased new or demo and within two years of initial registration
  • Salvage rights for vintage, veteran or classic cars
  • Reasonable cost of towing and storing your vehicle if it’s deemed unsafe to drive after a covered event (up to 30 days of storage)
  • Damage sustained to your trailer or caravan while attached to your vehicle or in your custody (up to $750)
  • Temporary replacement cover for your new car if you sell your previous one for up to 14 days from the date you sell it (up to its market value)
  • Choice of licenced repairer automatically included
  • Payout of $7,500 in the event of the fatality of you or another listed driver as a direct result of an incident that causes damage to or loss of your vehicle
  • RACQ lifetime repair guarantee
Fire, theft and third party liability car insurance

Fire, theft and third party liability cover, often known as Third Party Fire and Theft (TPFT) cover, is a level of insurance coverage that falls between RACQ’s Comprehensive and Third party liability car insurance. When you choose RACQ's TPFT cover policy, you may enjoy the following inclusions:

  • Loss of or damage to your car due to fire or theft
  • Legal liability for damage to other people’s property caused by your car up to $20 million
  • Emergency repairs to ensure your vehicle is safe to drive (up to $500)
  • Reasonable cost of towing and storing your vehicle if it’s deemed unsafe to drive after a covered event (up to 30 days of storage)
  • Damage to your vehicle caused by an uninsured motorist who was completely at fault (up to $5,000)
  • Choice of licenced repairer automatically included
  • RACQ lifetime repair guarantee
Third party liability car insurance

The lowest level of optional car insurance cover, Third Party Property Only (TPPO) cover is designed to offer protection to you against damage you might cause to other people’s property. RACQ’s TPPO cover can include the following:

  • Legal liability for damage to other people’s property caused by your car up to $20 million
  • Damage to your vehicle caused by an uninsured motorist who was completely at fault (up to $5,000)

Are there any optional extras available through RACQ?

Yes – RACQ offers several optional extras on their Comprehensive and TPFT cover policies. These are:

  • Hire car after a covered incident for up to 21 days (aside from theft)
  • No excess on one windscreen, window or sunroof glass claim for each period of insurance
  • No claim discount protection for the first at-fault claim in each period of insurance

What are some of the pros and cons of buying car insurance through RACQ?

  • Generous rental vehicle cover: if your vehicle is unable to be driven due to theft or another covered event, you can be covered for part of the cost of a rental car for up to 21 days.
  • Choice of repairer automatically included: many insurers offer policyholders a choice of repairer as an optional extra (or not at all), but RACQ includes this as standard on their comprehensive policies.
  • Driver fatality benefit: if you or another listed driver suffers a fatal injury while at the wheel of your vehicle as a result of a covered event, RACQ can also pay out $7,500 to the deceased’s estate.
  • No lifetime repair guarantee for third party liability cover: although the lifetime repair guarantee offered by RACQ is present on its comprehensive and fire and theft cover policies, this isn’t the case for its third party liability cover.
  • Available in Queensland only: if you live in another state or territory of Australia, you won’t have access to coverage for your vehicle through RACQ, as their car insurance is only available for vehicles registered in Queensland.

Common questions about RACQ car insurance

Can I purchase CTP insurance through RACQ?

Yes – RACQ does offer CTP insurance in Queensland at the time of writing. However, they’ve announced their intention to withdraw from the scheme as of October 1, 2023, so you won’t be able to purchase your CTP through them after this point if their withdrawal is successful.

What roadside assistance options are available through RACQ?

RACQ offers five different levels of roadside assistance cover, ranging from Everyday Lite to Ultimate Care, as well as a specialist service for RVs. These can be purchased separately from their car insurance policies, meaning you can take out roadside assistance without car insurance if you choose to.

What are the other benefits of being a RACQ member?

RACQ offers a range of additional benefits to its members. These include:

  • Loyalty discounts on its products and services
  • Discounts on experiences, shopping deals and gift cards
  • Optional subscriptions to various RACQ publications
  • RACQ’s Fair Fuel Price, enabling you to find the lowest prices for petrol in your area
  • Ongoing opt-in competitions with experiences up for grabs
  • Access to their in-house car broker service
How do I make a claim through RACQ?

You can submit your car insurance claim with RACQ either online, over the phone or in-store at one of their locations across Queensland.
