What car insurance policies are available through Bupa?

Bupa offers the following types of car insurance to Australian drivers:

Bupa Ultimate Comprehensive Cover

Bupa’s Ultimate Comprehensive insurance provides all the features of its standard Comprehensive plan with additional benefits included. It offers the following inclusions:

  • Coverage for the loss or damage to your car due to accident, collision, theft or attempted theft, malicious damage, fire (including bushfire) or natural events
  • New-for-old car replacement applies if the car is a total loss within the first 3 years of its original registration, has travelled less than 70,000km and you are the first registered owner
  • Hire car after theft, with reimbursement of up to $80 per day for a maximum of 14 days
  • Up to $1,000 coverage for accidental loss or damage to a trailer or caravan attached to your car
  • Up to $500 reimbursement for essential temporary repairs to make your car roadworthy
  • Coverage for loss or damage to your car during transportation within Australia, including loading, unloading and various modes of transport
  • Up to $1,000 coverage for accidental loss, theft or damage to personal property
  • Coverage for child safety seats, baby capsules and prams up to $500 in case of damage or theft while in the car
  • Up to $2,000 reimbursement for emergency travel and accommodation expenses if your car is undrivable and you are far from home
  • Coverage of up to $2,000 for replacement or recoding of car locks and keys if they are stolen
  • Reasonable coverage of towing costs to a safe location or approved repairer for a damaged car
  • Coverage of up to $2,000 for rental car excess or security bond required under a rental or loan car agreement in case of loss or damage to the car while in your custody
  • Up to $30 million for any legal liability from an accident, including legal costs and expenses covered by the policy
  • Legal liability cover for accidents involving uninsured substitute cars that you have legal use of, while your car is being repaired and cannot be driven
Bupa Comprehensive Cover

Comprehensive car insurance provides extensive protection if your car is in an accident or otherwise damaged . Bupa's comprehensive policy has the following inclusions: 

  • Coverage for your car in case of accidents, collision, theft or attempted theft, malicious damage, fire (including bushfire), or natural events
  • New-for-old car replacement within the first 24 months from the starting date of its original registration if your car is stolen or damaged
  • In the event of theft, coverage for a hire car with a daily limit of up to $70 for a maximum of 14 days
  • Trailer and caravan cover, up to $1,000 for accidental loss or damage occurring while it was attached to your car
  • Essential temporary repairs up to $500 to restore your car to a roadworthy condition for safe driving to your intended destination
  • Transit cover covering loss or damage to your car during transportation between places in Australia
  • Up to $500 for accidental loss, theft or damage to personal property
  • Up to $500 for child safety seats and prams damaged or stolen while in the car
  • Up to $500 for emergency travel and accommodation when your car is undrivable and you are more than 200 kilometres from home
  • Up to $1,000 for replacement or recoding of stolen car keys and locks
  • Reasonable costs covered for towing your damaged car to a safe place or approved repairer
  • Up to $20 million coverage for legal liability, including compensation, legal costs, and expenses, for damage to other people's property caused by an accident that is your fault
  • Legal liability cover for accidents involving uninsured substitute cars that you have legal use of, while your car is being repaired and cannot be driven
Bupa Third Party Property Cover

Bupa’s Third Party Property cover offers the most basic level of optional cover, covering you for damage that your car causes to other people's vehicles and property. It includes:

  • Legal liability cover up to $20 million, compensating you for damage to other people's property resulting from accidents caused by your car, a substitute car or a trailer/caravan attached to your car at the time of the accident
  • Up to $3,000 for damage to your vehicle in the event of a collision caused by an uninsured third party

This cover can be extended to include Fire & Theft cover as an optional extra, which offers the following inclusions:

  • Up to $10,000 in the case of theft, attempted theft or fire (including bushfire)
  • Rental car after theft, up to $70 per day for a maximum of 14 days
  • Up to $500 for essential temporary repairs to restore your car to a roadworthy and safe condition
  • Up to $500 for theft or damage to personal items that were in your car
  • Up to $500 for emergency travel and accommodation if your car cannot be driven and you are more than 200km from home
  • Up to $1,000 for replacing or recoding your car’s locks and keys after theft
  • Reasonable costs of towing a damaged car to a safe location and to an approved repairer

Are there any optional extras available through Bupa?

Yes – Bupa offers a number of optional extras on its Comprehensive and Ultimate Comprehensive car insurance policies:

  • Pay as you drive cover (if you drive 15,000km or less each year)
  • Hire car cover after theft or damage to your vehicle
  • Excess-free windscreen cover
  • Excess-free kangaroo damage cover
  • Sports gear cover

What are some of the pros and cons of buying car insurance through Bupa?

  • Choice of agreed or market value: you can choose to insure your car for its market value or agreed value.
  • PAYD cover available: if you drive less frequently, you can choose PAYD cover as an optional extra.
  • Choice of optional extras: there are several optional extras on offer, including kangaroo damage cover and sports gear cover. 
  • No choice of repairer: For standard Comprehensive plans, Bupa will only authorise repairs done by a repairer it has appointed and approved.
  • Limited child seat cover: cover for child seats and prams is capped at $500, as of July 2023.

Common questions about Bupa car insurance

How do I make a car insurance claim with Bupa?

If your car insurance policy was issued on or after 1 July 2022, you can lodge a claim online via Bupa’s online portal or by calling the dedicated support line. If your policy was issued before this date, you will have to call to lodge your claim.

You will need to provide information such as your policy number, address and details of anyone else involved in the claim.

How can I save money on my Bupa car insurance?

There are several ways you could save money on your Bupa car insurance cover:

  • You can lower your premiums by choosing a higher excess
  • If you drive less than average, under 15,000km each year, you could save by choosing PAYD cover
  • If you are already a Bupa Health Insurance member, you can get 10% off your policy, and 15% off if you are a Bupa Ultimate Health Insurance member
Can anyone drive my car with Bupa car insurance?

Licensed drivers and learner drivers older than the minimum age listed on your certificate of insurance can all be insured. However, learner drivers, drivers under 25 and inexperienced drivers are subject to a learner driver excess, age excess and inexperienced driver excess respectively, and undeclared young drivers face a significantly higher excess if they are in an accident when behind the wheel.

Can I get cover for my caravan or trailer with Bupa?

Yes – Bupa offers separate caravan and trailer insurance to provide cover wherever you are in Australia.
