More information about Xoom

About Xoom

Xoom was founded in 2001 in San Francisco. It slowly competed with its main rival Western Union for many years in the US international money remittance arena, eventually going public in 2013. However, in November 2015, it was acquired by PayPal in an acquisition valued at over US $1.09 billion.

Importantly, though, it has not yet expanded into Australia. As a result, it’s possible to send money to Australia using Xoom, but it isn’t possible to send money from Australia to anywhere else in the world using this service.

The products and services Xoom offers

International money transfers

It’s possible to complete international money transfers from the USA and Canada and some European countries to more than 159 different countries using Xoom. However, it’s not possible for Australians to use this service to send money (unless you have a bank account in the USA, Canada, the UK or Europe).

Cash deliveries and pickups

If you live in the USA, Canada or parts of Europe, it’s possible to arrange for a cash pickup or delivery to many other countries using Xoom. The countries serviced are mainly in North and South America, plus some popular Asian nations.

Mobile phone recharges

Xoom can also arrange mobile phone top-ups and recharges to phones in many nations. Again, the recharges need to paid for either in US or Canadian dollars, British pounds or Euros.

Is there a workaround to use Xoom services from Australia?

If you’re living in Australia and have a bank account that is registered in either the USA, Canada, the UK or some European nations, it could be worth trying to use Xoom through a linked bank account from one of these nations where it's now established. However, Xoom’s website says users need to be resident in a country where services are offered in order to use their service. As such, any Australian residents looking to use Xoom won't be able to do so.

The pros and cons of using Xoom

PROS

Multiple payout options from USA and Canada

If you’re in the USA or Canada, it’s possible to send money to 159 other countries choosing between bank-to-bank accounts transfers, cash pickups and cash deliveries.

Fast service

Just like using PayPal, transfers using Xoom can be very fast, especially for cash pickups and deliveries. However, a bank account in the USA or Canada is required.

Mobile phone top-ups offered

It’s also possible to top-up or recharge a mobile phone through Xoom as long as you have an American or Canadian bank account to fund the transfer.

CONS

Can’t send money from Australia

Xoom hasn’t yet expanded its service to include Australia, so it’s possible to receive money through the service in Australia, but it’s not possible to send money overseas using Aussie dollars through Xoom.

Large markups

Xoom charges a markup on the exchange rate offered, which is often considerably higher than those offered by its money transfer competitors, so it may not be the best way to send money overseas anyway.

Fees may be higher

Equally, the fees charged by Xoom for their international transfers are not the lowest offered by money transfer providers, so overall they may not prove to be the cheapest transfer option if the service is available to you.
