Our review of the American Express Explorer
The American Express Explorer card boasts a flexible reward program with transferable points to eight of the world’s most popular frequent flyer programs. Aimed at frequent travellers, the card offers travel credits, complimentary travel insurance, including overseas purchase protection for extra peace of mind. The big draw is a complimentary 50,000 MRG points if you spend $3,000 within 3 months.
However, a premium card attracts a premium annual fee of $395. In view of the rewards on offer, you’ll get the fee back in the many bonuses, points, and extras.

$400 in Travel Credits
Card holders may enjoy $400 to use towards any eligible flights, hotels, experiences or car hire booked and paid online with American Express Travel. As long as you book through their travel service, you can use the credits.
High Point Earning Rate
The Amex Explorer includes entry into the American Express Membership Rewards Gateway program (MRG.) It’s a simple proposition: earn 2 points for every dollar spent on the card (unless you spend it on government purchases, where you’ll only earn half a point (0.5 points = $1.) This is a departure from most cards, which do not attract points for any government purchases.
Better yet, there’s no cap on earning points – ever. You could buy an entire planeload of seats (credit limit permitting!) and still earn 2 MRG points for each dollar spent.
Cardholders can also apply for four supplementary cards for family members at no fee, which also earns the same amount of points. This can lead to greater rewards more quickly.
Great Point Conversion Rate
Further flexibility comes in the Amex Explorer’s ability to transfer points to eight of the world’s biggest and most extensive frequent flyer programs.
You can transfer 4 Membership Rewards for 3 points or miles with Velocity Frequent Flyer, Asia Miles, Emirates Skywards, Etihad Guest, Malaysian Airlines Enrich, Singapore Airlines KrisFlyer, and Thai Royal Orchid Plus. You may also exchange 400 Membership Rewards points for 3 Air New Zealand Airpoint Dollars.

Travel insurance is included whenever you pay for travel using the Explorer card, including your partner and any dependent children. This includes $2.5 million in emergency medical expenses, $30,000 in travel cancellation cover, and $10,000 of baggage, money, and documentation cover to cover loss or damage. You can also apply for up to $500 in compensation if your flight is delayed four hours or more.
