What information do I need to provide to buy a travel insurance policy?

  • Your details: you’ll be required to provide all travellers' names and birth dates so your insurer can accurately provide you with a price for comprehensive and basic cover. If you’re a senior traveller over 65, you may have to pay a higher premium to take out travel insurance.
  • Pre-existing conditions: insurance companies require you to disclose whether you suffer from any pre-existing conditions when you take out a policy. In most cases, you’ll be covered for a slew of minor issues such as asthma and certain types of diabetes. However, you might have to pay a higher excess if you need cover for a more serious condition such as multiple sclerosis or non-terminal cancer.
  • COVID-19 vaccination status: many travel insurance providers require you to disclose if you have received two doses of a COVID-19 vaccine. Being fully vaccinated is a requirement for entry to many countries, including if you want to travel to America.
  • Any extra coverage: Most insurers will ask you if you need coverage for optional extras such as skiing, riding a motorcycle or scuba diving while on holiday in Bali, for instance. These recreational activities aren’t covered under your standard policies and require you to pay a higher premium to be covered.

What details do I need to submit for a travel insurance claim?

Making a claim online or over the phone is relatively straightforward with most travel insurance companies. If you’re already overseas, you can process a claim not long after the incident happens.

When you’re making a claim, you will need to provide some information to your insurance company. This will usually include:

  • Policy information: you’ll need to enter your policy number and the email which is attached to it to get the ball rolling on your insurance claim.
  • Claim details: all travel insurance providers require you to complete a claim form, which allows you to provide information about the incident you’re claiming for. It’s recommended you provide plenty of detail, as this will reduce the likelihood of your insurer needing to do follow-up calls for clarification, which could delay the claim process and hold being approved.
  • Attach your documents: travel insurance companies will require evidence to back up your claim, which can include documents such as proof of purchases, receipts or police and medical reports. For example, if you’re claiming for cash stolen on holiday in Sweden, you will need to attach the report you filed with local police, your airline or hotel to have your claim considered.

Once you’ve provided all the necessary details, you can go ahead and submit your claim. Most insurers will tell you it can take up to ten working days to process a claim and for you to receive your coverage. That’s why it’s best to submit your claim as soon as possible, both to speed up the reimbursement of your funds and also so the details of the incident remain fresh in your mind.
