More about NRMA travel insurance

What travel insurance policies does NRMA offer?

NRMA offers a range of travel insurance policies, including:

  • International Platinum Plan: this policy provides coverage for overseas medical and dental expenses, luggage and personal effects, additional pet boarding and funeral expenses. This policy also offers the most generous claim limits of NRMA’s products, including $2. 5 million personal liability cover.
  • International Premium Plan: this policy clips a few of the benefits from NRMA’s comprehensive product but still provides coverage for cancellation, medical expenses, accidental death and personal liability. The claim limits on this policy are slightly lower than the top-tier product.
  • International Essentials Plan: This particular policy covers you for the bare essentials, whether you’re taking an international holiday to Vietnam or Switzerland. This policy covers you for cancellation or rescheduling of your getaway, medical and hospital expenses, some emergency expenses and $1 million in personal liability if you’re involved in an accident or injury.
  • Domestic Plan: taking a trip across Australia or visiting family in another capital city? NRMA offers a domestic travel insurance policy which protects you against cancellation, certain medical expenses, loss or damage of your bags and the excess on a hire car. You’re also afforded $1, 000 in funeral expenses if you die due to a covered incident while you’re on your trip.
  • Cancellation-Only Plan: it’s all in the name. This policy purely covers you for any pre-paid costs if you need to cancel or reschedule your holiday due to a covered event. You get to choose the level of cancellation cover you need as part of this specific policy.
  • Annual Multi-Trip Insurance: are you taking many trips this year? Multi-trip insurance can be the best option if you travel often during the year. Multi-Trip, included in both International and Domestic Comprehensive, pays for any number of trips done during a year.

It's important to compare domestic and international insurance options with Savvy before you buy your policy, whether you're going to the Netherlands or simply travelling around Australia.

What optional extras are available through NRMA?

NRMA, like many other travel insurers, provides a range of optional extras for both international and domestic holidays. These include:

  1. Ski and winter sports cover: looking to do some snowboarding on holiday? NRMA offers ski and winter sports coverage which covers cancellation of passes and associated fees, medical expenses, snow ski equipment, piste closure and bad weather or avalanches.
  2. Cruise cover: if you have a cruise scheduled, either internationally or domestically, you’ll need to acquire extra coverage if you’re going with NRMA for your travel insurance. Onboard medical expenses, formal cruise attire, emergency expenses and marine rescue diversion are all covered by this policy.
  3. Rental vehicle excess cover: planning to hire a rental car to get around your holiday destination? This add-on covers you for the excess on your loan car if you’re involved in an accident or the vehicle is damaged.
  4. Specified luggage items cover: with this add-on, you may extend the coverage for any high-priced things you're bringing on your trip. Cameras and other equipment, jewellery, camping gear, and eyewear such as glasses or sunglasses all fit into this category.

What exclusions should I be aware of when buying travel insurance through NRMA?

It’s important to remember that even the most extensive product won’t provide you with limitless coverage, with providers still having a list of exclusions on their policies. NRMA’s exclusions include:

  1. Stopping a course of treatment while on holiday
  2. Travelling against your doctor’s advice
  3. Medical expenses due to an uncovered and/or undisclosed medical condition, such as mental illness or a heart condition
  4. The birth of a child
  5. Any loss due to a dangerous or reckless act
  6. Accidents caused by the consumption of alcohol or drugs
  7. Breaking the law in your rental car

If you’ve found a policy that draws your eye, make sure you review the Product Disclosure Statement (PDS) before you set your decision in stone.

What we think of NRMA travel insurance

What we like

Discounts for buying online

If you simply purchase your policy online through NRMA’s website, you receive a 10% discount off your premium. This only applies if you buy direct, not through a third-party source.

Extensive luggage cover

Unlike many insurance companies on the market, NRMA offers cover for lost or damaged luggage or personal items across most of their policies, including the basic international option.

24/7 support

In the event of an emergency while overseas, you can rest easy knowing that NRMA is there for you 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

What we don't like

Cruise coverage comes at an extra cost

While some providers automatically include cruise cover as part of their domestic or international travel insurance policies, NRMA makes you pay a higher premium to be covered while you’re sailing the high seas.

Strict pre-existing medical condition requirements

Certain types of diabetes and asthma are included at no extra cost in NRMA's travel insurance policies. However, if you have a major medical condition like heart disease, you must seek a medical evaluation before being covered.

Modest personal liability coverage

If a court rules that you’re personally liable for the damage or injury to another person or property, NRMA allows you to claim up to $2. 5 million, which is lower than other providers.

Frequently asked questions about NRMA travel insurance

Does NRMA offer coverage for COVID-19?

No – NRMA’s website says it doesn’t cover incidents arising from pandemics and won’t reimburse claims made due to border closures, quarantine, flight cancellations or disruptions or other emergency expenses.

How do I make a claim through NRMA?

If your travel plans hit a speed bump or the unexpected happens and you need to file a claim, NRMA allows you to file it online day or night. Making a claim through the travel insurance company means following these three steps:

  • Complete the claim form with ample information, including what type of travel insurance claim you’re making
  • Gather your relevant documentation such as medical or police reports or receipts
  • Submit your claim via the website or email

Once you’ve submitted your claim, NRMA sends you a confirmation email. Their website says the turnaround time for approvals is about 10 working days.

How much will my NRMA travel insurance cost?

There’s no one-size-fits-all when it comes to how much travel insurance costs, with the price of premiums determined by a unique set of variables including:

  • Your date of birth
  • Your chosen destination
  • The level of coverage you buy
  • Any optional extras you need
  • Pre-existing medical conditions you need to disclose
  • The policy excess you choose
  • The type of insurer and insurance policy you buy
What are the differences between single, annual and one-way trip travel insurance?

A single-trip policy only covers one outbound journey and one return journey. In contrast, annual multi-trip policies cover you for an unlimited number of travels within a year (often up to 60 travel days per trip). If you’re taking a single flight without the option of returning home, you may get a one-way travel insurance policy that will cover you for the whole length of your stay (up to a year). Many insurance policies allow for an additional year of coverage to be purchased.
