More about Jetstar travel insurance

What travel insurance policies does Jetstar offer?

Jetstar offers several travel insurance policies; however, you must have a flight booking with them to purchase a policy. These include:

  • Essentials Plus International Travel Insurance: this type of policy for overseas travel covers you for cancellation of your trip, medical and hospital expenses, your baggage and personal items and personal liability if you’re embroiled in legal issues while you’re on holiday abroad.
  • Domestic Travel Insurance: suited to those who are taking a holiday within Australia, Jetstar’s domestic policy covers the basics such as cancellation of your travel tickets, extra accommodation and meal expenses, checked-in baggage, the excess on a hire car and missed connections. This domestic policy is also available as a family plan.
  • Trans-Tasman Travel Insurance: this policy covers you for trips taken to New Zealand with Jetstar. Some of the key areas of cover include emergency medical evacuation, additional travel costs, checked-in luggage cover and a quarantine allowance if you’re diagnosed with COVID-19 while on your holiday.

Travel insurance is always a must, no matter whether you’re flying to Denmark, hopping across to New Zealand or taking a trip up to Darwin. As such, it’s important to compare policies with Savvy to ensure you find the one which offers the most suitable coverage at an affordable price.

What optional extras are available through Jetstar?

Similar to a few other travel insurance companies, Jetstar doesn’t offer any optional extras that you can tack onto your standard policies, such as coverage for winter sports or adventure activities.

What exclusions should I be aware of when buying travel insurance through Jetstar?

Even though travel insurance is designed to protect you against the unexpected and unplanned while on holiday, it won’t cover you for every single thing that goes wrong if you’re travelling domestically or internationally. As such, Jetstar has a few exclusions on their policies including:

  1. Losing your belongings if you aren’t taking proper care
  2. Travelling on a privately-chartered plane or boat
  3. Booking travel against doctors’ advice
  4. Items confiscated by government officials
  5. Breaking the law or road rules in your hire car
  6. Accidents caused by the consumption of alcohol or drugs
  7. Intentionally injuring yourself or attempting suicide
  8. Claims for treatment for unapproved pre-existing medical conditions, such as mental illness

If you’ve found a policy that draws your eye, make sure you review the Product Disclosure Statement (PDS) before you set your decision in stone.

What we think of Jetstar travel insurance

What we like

Very cheap travel insurance policies

Jetstar offers extremely cheap travel insurance policies that start from as low as $27 per person, potentially saving buyers a significant amount on their cover.

Inexpensive excesses

While many travel insurers require you to pay up to $250 to make a claim on your travel insurance, Jetstar’s $100 excess requirement is comparatively quite low.

Cover for help at home

If you’ve had a stint in hospital on your holiday for more than ten days, Jetstar pays for a housekeeper to help you out upon your return home.

What we don't like

Limited to Jetstar passengers

Unless you’ve booked to travel on a Jetstar flight, you won’t be able to purchase a travel insurance policy through the airline.

No optional extras available

Jetstar doesn’t offer any optional extra coverage for activities such as winter sports or motorcycle riding, which could leave you without cover if you’re planning on indulging in these on your holiday.

Capped overseas medical cover

In most cases, travel insurance companies allow you to claim an unlimited amount for medical treatment or hospital costs overseas. However, Jetstar caps this at $2.5 million.

Frequently asked questions about Jetstar travel insurance

Does Jetstar cover COVID-19 on its travel insurance?

Yes – Jetstar offers cover for COVID-19-related costs. For example, they cover the cost of any medical treatment necessary if you’re diagnosed with the virus while travelling and they also allow you to claim up to $5,000 for cancelling your ticket and travel plans due to a positive diagnosis on certain policies.

How do I make a claim through Jetstar?

You must notify AIG of your claim if you need to make one under your Jetstar Travel Insurance policy within 30 days of returning home. You must offer the following information for your claim to be processed:

  • Travel insurance certificate
  • Supporting documents such as receipts or medical reports

Usually, travel insurance companies will respond to your claim within ten working days. During that period, they may request additional information to help process your claim. It’s best to respond promptly to ensure the process is hassle-free.

Does Jetstar offer coverage for pregnant travellers?

Yes – Jetstar can provide cover for injury or illness to those bearing children so long as they are no further than 26 weeks along in their pregnancy. You’re also covered if your injuries or illness accelerate your child’s birth. However, you won’t be covered for routine doctor’s visits or attempting to give birth using IVF while on holiday.

How much will my Jetstar travel insurance cost?

Unlike other travel costs, there’s no one-size-fits-all price when it comes to travel insurance, with the premium you pay determined by a range of variables which include:

  • Your date of birth
  • Your chosen destination
  • The level of coverage you buy
  • Any optional extras you need
  • Pre-existing medical conditions you need to disclose
  • The policy excess you choose
  • The type of insurer and insurance policy you buy
Which pre-existing medical conditions do Jetstar cover?

Jetstar doesn’t cover pre-existing medical conditions under any of its policies. However, they’ll cover a range of illnesses they deem not to be long-term, such as acne, allergies, cataracts, coeliac disease, eczema and glaucoma.
