What we think of Australian Unity’s travel insurance

What we like

COVID-19 coverage

Australian Unity covers you for medical expenses you incur if you test positive for COVID-19 while on holiday, as well as for border closures and pre-trip cancellations.

Free cover for children

If you’re travelling with your children or grandchildren, Australian Unity allows you to include any dependents under 25 on your policy for free.

Choice of cancellation cover

You get to choose the level of cancellation coverage you take out with your policy, which is generally anywhere from $1,000 up to an unlimited value.

What we don't like

Tough pre-existing condition requirements

If you don't fulfil certain requirements set by Australian Unity, securing coverage for a pre-existing medical condition may prove difficult. As a result, coverage for pregnant women is quite limited.

Limited luggage cover

Unlike some insurers, whose comprehensive plans cover far more than just medical emergencies, Australian Unity only covers up to $10,000 in lost or stolen bags and travel documents.

Age limits

A medical exam may be required for coverage under some policies if you're over 75 at the time of purchasing your insurance.

Frequently asked questions about Australian Unity’s travel insurance

How do I make a claim on my Australian Unity travel insurance policy?

When you have travel insurance from Australian Unity, you may file a claim at any time, day or night, directly from their website. Just in case you need to file a claim:

  • Provide your insurance information, including your full name and birth date
  • Include any relevant paperwork, such as invoices or medical records
  • Put in a claim

You may check on the status of your claim with Australian Unity by using their online system. You can expect to hear back from your provider within ten business days and should answer any questions they may have as soon as possible to avoid holding up the refund process.

How much will my Australian Unity travel insurance cost?

Travel insurance doesn’t have a one-size-fits-all cost, as the price of your premium is determined by variables which include:

  • Age
  • Destination (travelling to Egypt can be costly because of the lack of universal health care)
  • Level of coverage
  • Optional extras you choose
  • Pre-existing medical conditions
  • Chosen policy excess
  • Type of insurer and insurance policy you purchase
Does Australian Unity cover pregnancy as part of their travel insurance policies?

Yes – but only if you're having your first child, under 24 weeks pregnant and have never had any problems with a pregnancy before. Australian Unity requires prospective policyholders to submit to a medical examination and application if they are expecting many children or have a history of complications after childbirth.

What’s the difference between single-trip, annual and one-way travel insurance policies?

Unlike annual multi-trip coverage, which can cover as many trips as you want during the policy's validity period, single-trip insurance covers one holiday starting and ending in Australia. Travellers without return tickets booked can purchase one-way insurance, policies which can last up to 12 months.
