More about Avant travel insurance

What types of travel insurance policies does Avant offer?

Avant’s sole travel insurance policy is an annual multi-trip option which allows you to take an unlimited number of trips over the course of 12 months. Individual trips can’t be any longer than six months and you can add coverage for your children or spouse for free. Cover includes unlimited overseas medical expenses, emergency assistance, lost or stolen luggage, cancellation and lost deposits. The policy also includes significant coverage for COVID-19-related expenses, such as medical costs overseas and needing to reschedule your trip because of a positive diagnosis.

However, you need to be an Avant Mutual member to purchase a policy. Membership is limited to medical students, interns, doctors in training, general practitioners or post-graduate medical officers.

What optional extras are available through Avant’s travel insurance policies?

Avant offers a few unique optional extras for your travel insurance, including:

  1. Surgical procedures benefit: if you undergo surgery due to an injury or illness relating to a claim, you can claim compensation from Avant. Payable surgeries include open heart surgery, abdominal surgery, craniotomy and some other surgeries carried out under general anaesthesia. You can claim up to $20,000 for this extra.
  2. Rehabilitation cover: Avant pays you a weekly benefit if your return to work is delayed due to illness or injury. They’ll also cover the cost of a return-to-work program if it’s delivered by a licenced provider and the costs are “reasonable”.

What exclusions should I be aware of when buying travel insurance through Avant?

Some of the general exclusions on Avant’s travel insurance policy include:

  1. You’re in the armed forces travelling to a war zone
  2. Radioactive contamination
  3. Losses of personal items left unattended
  4. Intentional injuries or attempted suicide
  5. Accidents caused by alcohol or drug consumption
  6. Partaking in a professional sport
  7. Expenses already claimed through private health or Medicare
  8. Costs involved with you breaking the law

Before you settle on a policy that you think suits your next holiday, make sure you review the Product Disclosure Statement (PDS). This gives you a good idea of what’s covered, as well as what isn’t, in finer detail.

What we think of Avant’s travel insurance

What we like

24/7 emergency assistance

No matter if you need to urgently cover some hospital bills or just need to clarify parts of your policy, Avant offers you around-the-clock support while you’re travelling domestically and internationally.

Generous theft of cash cover

Avant bucks the trend when it comes to cover for stolen money, allowing you to claim up to double the amount of some of their competitors.

COVID-19 coverage

Avant provides you coverage for COVID-19-related costs including if you require overseas medical treatment or need to cancel your trip because of a positive diagnosis.

What we don't like

Limited to medical practitioners

Because Avant is a mutual fund exclusively for health practitioners, their travel insurance policy is limited to those who have a membership number and have already taken out indemnity insurance.

No pregnancy coverage

Avant doesn’t cover any claims relating to childbirth or pregnancy, compared to many other providers who can cover up to your 30th week of gestation.

Low hire car cover

While many providers offer you coverage of up to $8,000 for the excess on a rental vehicle, Avant only offers you up to half of that amount.

Frequently asked questions about Avant’s travel insurance

What COVID-19-related costs does Avant cover in its travel insurance policies?

Avant covers a whole range of COVID-19-related costs, such as:

  • Cover of up to $10,000 for the loss of booking deposits and pre-trip cancellation if you test positive before your departure
  • An unlimited amount of overseas medical expenses cover if you contract COVID-19 while travelling internationally
  • Lost income protection if you test positive and can’t return to work
How do I make a claim on my Avant travel insurance?

If you need to make a claim on your travel insurance through Avant, you will need to go through Fullerton Assistance, which handles the claims process. This involves completing a claim form and providing any relevant documents that can help substantiate your claim, such as medical reports and proof of purchase documents.

Once your claim is lodged, you should hear back from Fullerton Assistance within ten working days. If your claim is approved, it will be paid out in Australian currency.

How much will my Avant travel insurance cost?

When it comes to how much you’ll pay for your travel insurance, there’s no such thing as an average cost which dictates the price of your premium. Instead, what you pay is determined by a range of variables including:

  • Age
  • Destination (travelling to America can be costly because of the lack of universal health care)
  • Level of coverage
  • Optional extras you choose
  • Pre-existing medical conditions
  • Chosen policy excess
  • Type of insurer and insurance policy you purchase
What’s the difference between single-trip, annual and one-way travel insurance policies?

An annual multi-trip policy covers you for multiple holidays taken over 12 months, whereas a single-trip travel insurance policy only covers you for one journey taken starting and ending in Australia. A trip on an annual policy can generally last up to as many as 90 days, but Avant offers coverage for holidays of up to 180 days on their policy. On the flip side, one-way policies cover travellers who haven’t yet booked a return ticket.
