This is American Express Platinum Charge card, which means there is no spending limit or interest paid on your purchases, but you must pay back the entire balance in full each month. It offers an abundance of inclusions and exclusive offers for cardholders.
Frequent Flyer points galore and travel perks
The Platinum Card is linked to the Membership Rewards Ascent Premium program, which allows you flexibility to transfer your points to 10 major airline programs, including Qantas Frequent Flyer, Velocity Frequent Flyer, Cathay Pacific Asia Miles, and Singapore Airlines KrisFlyer. You also gain a $450 travel credit each anniversary year after your first spend on the card, which you can use towards travel, accommodation and car hire through Amex Travel.
80,000 Membership Rewards bonus and high earnings rate
You’ll be enrolled in the highest tier of Amex’s Membership Rewards program, Ascent Premium, and earn points as follows:
- 3 points per $1 spent at restaurants in Australia until 14 April 2019.
- 2 points per $1 spent on airlines, accommodation and spend in foreign currency until 14 April 2019.
- 1 point per $1 spent on everything else, except for those below that earn 0.5 points, until 14 April 2019.
- 0.5 points per $1 spent on utilities, telecommunication companies, non-Amex provided insurance, and government bodies until 14 April 2019.
To summarise the upcoming earn rate changes: from 15 April 2019 you’ll earn 2.25 points per $1 spent everywhere except with government bodies, where you’ll earn 1 point per $1 spent.

This is the only card that allows entry into the American Express Fine Hotels and Resorts program, giving you preferred hotel status and perks such as late check-in, late check-out, service credits, room upgrades, and other perks. You’ll also get Gold elite status at hotel chains such as Hilton, Starwood Preferred, Radisson, and Shangri-La, among others. Booking flights through American Express Travel also includes a fare guarantee; if you find a business/first class fare cheaper, Amex will match it.

Each cardholder gets Priority Pass access to Airport lounges around the world, which includes 1,200 partner lounges in 130 countries. You also get free food and drinks when you and two guests stay in the lounge. You also gain unlimited access to Virgin, Delta, and American Express branded lounges.

Possibly the best concierge in the business, the Amex Platinum Concierge is effectively your personal assistant, organising travel, activities, accommodation and more. Your concierge can also arrange difficult to book tickets to exclusive events, at your request.
Complimentary travel, retail, and personal insurance
The Amex Platinum Charge covers you comprehensively, and free, when you book travel. You and your family is covered for travel; accidents; loss of documents, money or baggage; smartphone damage; car rental damage waiver; purchase protection and refund protection on items; roadside assistance; and home repair callouts (twice per year.) This also extends to supplementary cardholders.
American Express’ flagship consumer charge card is filled with abundant benefits, inclusions, insurance policies, and offers. The benefits more than justify the $1,450 annual fee. If one is looking for a charge card to gain benefits one would forgo using cash, this is definitely the card for you. You will need deep pockets to get the most use out of it, though.
